Amidst the fear of the pandemic that we are facing today, the people from Cagayan de Oro are beyond blessed to have a new Bishop.
Cagayan de Oro has a new archbishop in the person of Malaybalay Bishop Jose Araneta Cabantan, replacing Archbishop Antonio Ledesma. Pope Francis has appointed Bishop Cabantan on June 23, at 6PM.
63-year old Bishop Cabantan is a native of Lagonglong, Misamis Oriental. He was appointed as the bishop of Malaybalay by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010.
He was among the first batch of priesr-graduates from St. John Vianney Theological Seminary in Camaman-an, Cagayan de Oro.
On April 30, 1990, Bishop Cabantan was ordained priest for the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro.
After a year as associate pastor of the Cathedral, he also served as:
- Administrator of the San Roque Parish of Catarman, Camiguin (1991-1995)
- Dean of Studies at the San Jose de Mindanao Seminary in Cagayan de Oro (1995-1997)
- Formator at the St. John Vianney Theological Seminary in Cagayan de Oro and Pastor of the Medalla Milagrosa Parish (2007-2010)
Not known to many, before he decided to pursue his vocation as a priest, Bishop Cabantan worked as a licensed Chemical Engineer. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the Cebu Institute of Technology.
