Just this September 8, 2021, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced the completion of the Cagayan de Oro City Convention Center’s main building.
The newly opened Convention Center boasts an impressive 10,500 square meters (113,000 square feet) of floor space and an astounding 7,700-person capacity! On top of that, its facilities can host 700 more people in its many function rooms.
Furthermore, the convention center complex will also host dedicated spaces for a Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) office, a multistory car park building, a viewing deck, a helipad, a pavilion, and an administrative building.
This grand installation was 20 years in the making, with construction beginning on June 30, 2001. After a long history of interruptions and controversy, the center is finally open.
Located in Taguanao, Indahag, Cagayan de Oro City, the convention center is going to serve as a hotspot for sports, concerts, conventions, exhibits, seminars, conferences, and trade shows.
A Virtual Inauguration and Turnover Ceremony was held on September 8 attended by DPWH-X Regional Director Zenaida T. Tan, DPWH Secretary Mark A. Villar, and TIEZA Chief Operating Officer Mark Lapid. The ceremony also heard remarks from Misamis Oriental Governor Bambi Emano, CDO City mayor Oscar Moreno, and National Economic and Development Authority Region X Director Mylah Faye Cariño.
Now that the completion of the main building is realized, Cagayan de Oro will see economic development in the area through internal and external investments, improvements in infrastructure, and tourism.
