Oftentimes we find ourselves in a position where we must let go of the old and make way for the new.
Such is the current position of Cagayan de Oro, as it tears down its old Public Library to deliver a bigger and better City Public Library.
Out with the old, in with the new
This huge project is meant to replace the age-old City Library, which was located along Don Apolinar Velez Street. The library had been described as dilapidated and worn, having lived for a long time.
It was time for an upgrade.
While the mayor of Cagayan de Oro believes that the “new library” is the internet and that books can be read on cellphones and iPads, the new library is still going to accommodate more readers and help students in their research.
Additionally, this project is going to help with the city’s shortage of classrooms.
Bigger and better facility
The new Cagayan de Oro City Library will be located in City Central School, the “cradle of talents” of the city. It is going to have 5 stories with 52 classrooms and will house a new Girl Scouts of the Philippines office.
This state-of-the-art library building had its ground-breaking ceremony on September 10, 2019, which was attended by the city mayor, vice-mayor, the City Council, the Local School Board, and the Department of Education Division of Cagayan de Oro.
The grand project was costed at just a bit under ₱100 million and construction is expected to take 2 years.
Taking a closer look at the perspectives created by the Engineering Office of Cagayan de Oro City, the library will have an appealing and modern design with plenty of windows for natural lighting. It will also be spacious with an elevator to add accessibility.
Although the old public library building had to be demolished to make way for a new facility, this modern installment will hopefully do better against the test of time and serve even more people than its predecessor.
If you wish to use the library now, the City Public Library is temporarily operating inside City Central School Campus in front of the Special Science Elementary School building. You can reach them through their number, +63 8823879, or via their email:
