A historical moment for the Philippines!

The Philippine women’s football team made history early Monday after securing the country’s first qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in India.

The Philippines beat Taiwan, 4-3, on penalties to earn a slot in the Women’s World Cup and a spot in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup semifinals. The historical win guaranteed the Philippines a spot in football’s most prestigious world tournament for the first time ever.

Sarina Bolden scored the winning goal for the Philippines in the penalty shoot-out while goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel got a couple of brave saves.

Coached by Australian Alen Stajcic, the Philippine team will compete with South Korea next for a spot in the semifinals on Thursday, February 3.

The World Cup, co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, is scheduled for July 2023.
