Turns out, Boracay’s white sand beaches and prestigious hotels are not enough, according to a recent survey!
Famed for its white beaches, Boracay Island was hailed as the top destination for both leisure and business travels, whether by a local or tourist. However, the 2012 Best Island in the World by Travel+Leisure and the 2014 winner of the same title by the Conde Nast Traveler is slowly losing its charm.
According to the March 2024 data of the Department of Tourism (DOT), the top destinations for international travelers are Palawan with 680,895 visitors, Pampanga with 583,743 visitors and running third place is Aklan which includes Boracay Island with 428,704 visitors as compared to their previous years’ 600,000 count.
The shift in the choice of travelers was rumored to be due to the hefty environmental fees in the Island, followed by the overpriced accommodations, and the overpopulated jetty port.
The Department of Tourism further aims to boost its promotion of Boracay Island once again for tourists, the way they successfully did to other islands in the Philippines such as Bohol, Cebu, and Siargao.
