MPOX, formerly known as “monkeypox,” is a contagious disease that could affect humans and animals. Although not necessarily a new kind of virus, MPOX was initially just endemic to West and Central Africa, but now, it has reached overseas and has touched down in our country. The question arises: is MPOX the next COVID we must look out for?

“Now with heightened awareness and increased detection by our dermatologists and other primary care provider nakikita natin ngayon ating cases na most likely sa paligid,” stated Department of Health (DOH) spokesperson, Albert Domingo, with regards to the latest “potential” MPOX patient in Samar.

According to the reports, the patient was a 24-year old male, who is now admitted at a hospital. The patient showed two-week long fever paired with body weakness, and vesicular rashes. And just like the case in NCR, the patient also did not have any travel history outside the Philippines. So, it is still a puzzle amongst the DOH on how both patients got the virus.

“He is currently receiving care at Northern Samar Provincial Hospital, where he is isolated and undergoing confirmatory testing for,” shared the provincial health office.

HOW TO STAY SAFE FROM MPOX

The Department of Health (DOH) is advising the public to adopt heightened hygiene practices, similar to those observed during the previous pandemic, to safeguard against MPOX. While MPOX is generally more treatable than COVID, with most patients making a full recovery, it remains crucial to exercise caution. By following better hygiene protocols, you can help protect yourself and your loved ones from potential infections.
