Poets offer us unique perspectives that enrich our understanding of the world. With their creative insight, we’d experience the beauty of songs, literature, and the depth of human emotion. They are language artisans, crafting verses that resonate deeply within us. So, it’s only fitting that we honor the art of poetry, especially in a country that has produced revolutionary literary figures like Dr. Jose Rizal.

In the Visayas and Mindanao regions, a vibrant literary scene is emerging nowadays, so let’s take a closer look at some notable Bisaya poets:

Simeon Dumdum Jr. and Ma. Milagros “Gingging” Dumdum

“Underneath all poetry is love. The best kiss has the sound of a Shakespeare sonnet,” remarked Simeon Dumdum Jr., expressing his affection for his wife Gingging. Both poets in their own right, Simeon and Gingging’s collaboration on “The Sigh of a Hundred Leaves” is a testament to Bisaya poetry’s inspiring and connected spirit.

Mark Anthony Daposala

Hailing from Cagayan de Oro City, Mark Anthony “Ton” Daposala is the creative force behind “Multa” and “Basa-Basa.” As a University of the Philippines professor, he imparts his knowledge of Sugbuanon Literature to his students. Ton’s literary contributions extend to his work translating contemporary Cebuano poetry and his works “Kabisdak: Cebuano Literary Lighthouse” and “Tinubdan: New Voices from Northern Mindanao.”
