The Visayas and Mindanao regions of the Philippines are filled with some of the most beautiful oceans and marine life, but one specific creature poses a significant risk for anyone who comes near it: the box jellyfish!
Box jellyfish, scientifically known as the “class cubozoa” can be distinguished by its transparent, box-shaped bell and long, stinging tentacles trailing behind them. Their stings are rarely fatal if treated immediately, but they can cause severe pain, nausea, and in extreme cases, cardiac arrest.
How to Spot a Box Jellyfish
Several years ago, during a late-night swim in Cebu, an alarming incident occurred where one of my friends suddenly cried out in distress and struggled to escape the water. She had been stung by a box jellyfish, a situation that could have been avoided if we had been more aware. Recognizing the box jellyfish can be challenging because it’s technically a transparent creature. But, there are indeed ways to spot them to better protect yourself:
- Bell Shape: The box jellyfish has a cube-shaped, transparent bell, which can be a bit bluish or pinkish.
- Tentacles: Four long tentacles extend from each corner of the bell.
- Eyes: Look for clusters of eyes that may be visible within the bell.
Precautionary Measures
There are ways to protect yourself from possibly getting stung by box jellyfish aside from being aware of the surrounding waters, such as:
- Wear a full-body clothing or rash guard to lessen your exposed skin. There are even anti-jellyfish suits available that you can opt for to provide additional protection.
- Know the peak jellyfish seasons. In the Philippines, it’s usually between April and June, which is the best time to take a plunge into the beautiful waters of the Visayas and Mindanao as well. In this case, it’s best to ask the locals about jellyfish info such as when and where it’s most prevalent.
- Take a first aid kit and vinegar with you on vacation. The vinegar neutralizes the venom when you’re stung while of course the first aid kit can help for other sorts of reactions.
Box jellyfish are confirmed to be found in Moalboal, Tacloban, and in Bantayan. But, remember, while it’s a dangerous creature, taking the right precautions will help ensure your water adventures remain safe and enjoyable, regardless of where you will be swimming in.
