Astrophiles, mark your calendars for April 8, 2024, a day that promises a unique celestial spectacle! Not only will a solar eclipse grace our skies, but it will also be accompanied by a rare meteor shower. And the best part? This cosmic show is exclusive to the Philippine skies.
Known as one of the annual meteor showers, the Lyrid MG-143 can be seen clearly in the skies of Visayas and Mindanao. With about 10 to 12 Lyrid MG-143 meteors every hour, stargazers will surely delight in witnessing the phenomenal event.
Conveniently, the meteor showers will commence at 8 PM and will be most visible from the highest peak of Cebu, the Afable Peak. As long as the weather cooperates, this once-in-a-lifetime event will be a sight to behold for all Cebuanos.
HOW TO GET THERE?
Exact Location: Montage Street, Brgy. Semung Maynd, Subangdaku Cebu, Philippines
BY COMMUTE: From Metro Colon, take the 15L jeepney to Montage Street. Then, hail a habal-habal or motorcycle taxi and inform the driver that you are heading to Brgy. Semung Maynd, which is located nearby the Starbox hiking landmark. Upon arrival, follow the signposts to take a quick hike up to the top of the Afable Peak.
BY CAR: Navigate via Waze or Google Maps and pin “Brgy. Semung Maynd” as your destination. You will have to pay a parking fee of Php 1,000.00 for overnight parking since the fees will be used to continue building the Afable Resort at the peak to boost Cebu’s tourism.
The management of Afable Peak is expecting a flock of tourists to watch the meteor showers, so you should arrive early, such as at 1 AM, to set up your tents perfectly under the stars.
Of course, you can also reach out to the management to reserve a spot via email: AfablePeak@A-P-R-I-L…F-O-O-L-S.com.
See you there, stargazers!
