The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) confirmed last November 19, 2024 that the water samples from Calubian Bay, Leyte and the one in San Pedro Bay, Samar, both tested negative from a certain toxin known as Pyrodinium bahamense, a.k.a the toxin that’s present in red tides.

However, other parts of the region are still considered positive for the toxin, including the following:

  • Guiuan, Eastern Samar
  • Calbayog City, Samar
  • Matarinao Bay, Eastern Samar
  • Cambatutay Bay, Samar
  • Leyte
  • Biliran Island
  • Carigara Bay, Leyte
  • Daram, Samar
  • Zumarraga islands, Samar
  • Irong-Irong Bay, Catbalogan City

Be Cautious with Hipon & Other Shellfish

BFAR continuously advised the public to avoid picking up, selling, and eating all types of shellfish as they’re the most common types of marine species that easily gets infected by the red tide toxin.

Although fish and other seafoods are usually safe to consume, it’s important to have every bit of it cleaned thoroughly prior to cooking.
