We wish there were a cheaper way to climb Mount Everest, the tallest mountain in the world. Unfortunately, there is no affordable option, as climbing Everest is inherently expensive.

In 2021, mountain climbers had to spend between $36,000 and $100,000 to join a climbing team in Nepal, primarily due to various fees, including a substantial permit fee of $11,000 per person. Additionally, climbers must invest in oxygen tanks and other equipment, as one of the greatest risks of dying on the mountain is running out of oxygen at high altitudes—an issue tragically illustrated by the infamous “green boots.”

Here are some personal equipment and their estimated prices that you have to consider when climbing the Everest:

  • Down Suit: $1,500
  • Boots and Crampons: $1,000
  • Sleeping bags: $1,500
  • Other clothes, gloves, hats, socks, pack, climbing gear: $2,000

Expedition Equipment

Now let’s discuss the equipment supplied by your team. At base camp, they provide tents for climbers and Sherpas, as well as cooking and dining areas. Additional tents are set up at higher camps, along with pots, pans, stoves, and gas for all locations.

Food

Food is another significant expense. All provisions must be transported by porters and yaks, with some food carried up to supply higher camps. This logistical challenge is managed with impressive efficiency by your local team, but it incurs substantial costs.

Sherpas

The Sherpas play a crucial role in your expedition. They assist by fixing lines, setting up camps, stocking supplies, and bringing everything back down at the end of the climb. Most Sherpas receive a base fee, as well as additional pay per load. They also earn bonuses depending on how far the team can progress.

Adding up every expense on the trip makes Mount Everest a tad bit on the financially high side, which still excludes the other potential fees and costs over time. So, if you have more than 2 million pesos at hand, then your probability of having a successful  climb and descent would be greater.
