What movies should you watch during Lent? How about films based on biblical and historical events that offer inspiration, sacrifice, and a longing for hope, as well as themes of renewal, self-discovery, and the search for life’s greater purpose?
The Bible

In the beginning. A 2013 Miniseries created by Roma Downey and Mark Burnett. A program where they narrate the Old and the New Testament, from the Exodus to the life and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is also a good medium to make the new generation of audience to engage the Bible in a new modern way.

DreamWorks: The Prince of Egypt

“Let my people go!” Another lighthearted film is DreamWorks’ adaptation of The Prince of Egypt, in which Moses discovers his Jewish roots and the plight of his people, who are enslaved by the Egyptians. He embarks on a quest to free the Jewish slaves and lead them to the Promised Land. Directed by Brenda Chapman, Steve Hickner, and Simon Wells, the film received several awards, including the Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Animated Feature.

The Ten Commandments

“By myself, I am nothing. It is the power of God that uses me to work His will.” The Ten Commandments, 1965, directed by Cecil B. DeMille, follows the life of Moses. In it, he discovers that he has a Hebrew heritage. After this discovery, he is dedicated to liberating the people. After the great crossing of the sea, Moses talks to God, and he is given the commandment while the people down below the mountain create a false god.

Journey to Bethlehem

A long time ago in Bethlehem. A musical adaptation of the holy family where Mary and Joseph traveled to Bethlehem where they are needed to be registered in their ancestral hometown which is in Bethlehem. Created by Adam Anders in 2013.

The Chosen

This series follows the life of Jesus and introduces His apostles, disciples, and other individuals who interact with Him and His followers. Released in 2017, the first season received positive feedback. It’s a great series to watch with the family, showcasing their stories and reflecting on Jesus’ mission and His passion. Produced by Chad Gundersen, Justin Tolley, and Chris Juen, the series currently has four seasons, with a fifth season titled The Chosen: The Last Supper set to air in April this year.

The Passion of the Christ

Do you remember when our parents owned tapes and DVDs and taught us about how our Savior sacrificed Himself to save us all? The Passion of the Christ, directed by Mel Gibson, is based on the New Testament. The film follows key events such as Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, where He was greeted with palms; His last supper with His disciples; His crucifixion on Mount Calvary; and His final breath. It’s a film that encourages reflection and reminds us that we can still have hope and renew ourselves.
