When planning a trip, most of our chosen itineraries include Cebu or Manila, which are the most well-known and established go-to destinations. However, down south, General Santos City—dubbed the “Tuna Capital of the Philippines”—boasts thriving facilities such as its ports, vibrant culture, and scenic coastal views. Because of that, the Department of Tourism is eyeing GenSan to be included in the routes and destinations of cruise ships to boost tourism.

GenSan should and will be part of the cruise destination landscape, and here’s why. The port of General Santos is gaining attention due to its capacity to accommodate various vessels, including cargo ships and future cruise liners. With its calm waters, it welcomes cruise passengers alongside the scenic views of the bay and the region’s verdant hills. If the water is that calm, can we swim there instead?

Partnering for Progress: The Role of Tourism

Currently, the local government, together with the Department of Tourism Region 12, is working on preparations with stakeholders. If this initiative is successful and the plans are put into motion, many people in the region—especially in GenSan—will see an increase in the local economy, tourism, and job opportunities.

With GenSan’s pristine bay and ever-evolving facilities, along with its rich culture, General Santos offers amazing experiences both on land and at sea. It invites travelers to embrace a fresh experience in the “Promised Land of the Philippines.”
