The Cebu City Public Information Office (PIO) shared on social media about the microchips that will come with GPS capabilities, making it easier than ever to keep tabs on registered and owned dogs across the city.

More than just a tech upgrade…

Microchipping isn’t new to Cebu City. In fact, a previous program was already implemented in past years. But this upcoming rollout is the first to offer real-time tracking through a built-in Global Positioning System (GPS).

Dr. Utlang recently presented the idea to Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia, who expressed support for a pilot run in two barangays: Kamputhaw and Basak Pardo. However, the final selection of pilot areas will depend on further evaluation. The DVMF is looking closely at dog population size and barangay support to make sure that the project will be manageable and successful. The idea is to start smart, then scale up.

The project isn’t just about tech upgrades, it aims to promote responsible pet ownership, help reduce lost pets, and support public safety and health efforts in the Queen City of the South. It’s a step forward in making sure dogs in the city are properly identified, cared for, and less likely to contribute to stray populations.

With initiatives like this, Cebu is showing how smart tech can be used to build a more pet-friendly city.
