In the mountains of Lanao del Sur lies a tunnel carved through rock and time that is quietly telling stories of war, roadways, and passage. Locally known as the Picong Tunnel, this road tunnel is said to be the only one of its kind in Mindanao. It draws the curious and the reflective those who want more than smooth highways but pathways with memory.

The Tunnel’s History and Construction

The Picong Tunnel was built by American forces during World War II, intended to facilitate movement of troops and supplies through the rugged terrain of Mindanao. At about 60 meters long, it’s modest in length but significant in engineering and historical weight. The tunnel cuts through a hillside near Picong which is formerly Sultan Gumander connecting remote roads that would otherwise wind around the terrain.

Cultural Significance and Local Lore

To locals and motor travelers, the tunnel is a living remnant of history. Some see it as a monument to the region’s endurance, weathering conflict, geography, and time. The echo of engines, the drip of rain inside, and the cool darkness all combine to evoke reflection and quiet. There are also whispers among locals and visitors of hidden stories of soldiers passing, supplies hauling, nights spent in lantern light inside the tunnel. Though concrete records are scarce, the tunnel’s presence invites imagination and dialogue across generations.
