One viral post showed the waters beneath the Cebu to Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX) allegedly drying up, sparking panic of an even bigger quake. Later, it was revealed that the photo was edited and misleading.

Why Fake News Hurts More Than Aftershocks

False information during disasters doesn’t just confuse, it endangers lives. Families may evacuate unnecessarily, roads may clog, and rescue efforts can be delayed. It also hurts innocent people when blame is misplaced. Instead of helping communities recover, fake news magnifies fear and mistrust.

During times of crisis, accurate updates can save lives while false ones put people at risk. The recent quake is a reminder, don’t share posts blindly. Verify first, trust only official channels, and be part of the solution, not the panic.

How To Spot Fake News?

1. Verify before sharing

Check with PHIVOLCS, PAGASA, local LGUs, or reputable news outlets like Cebu Daily News, SunStar, and GMA News before posting disaster updates.

2. Report harmful posts

Use Facebook’s “Report Post” option for edited or misleading content. The faster it’s flagged, the less damage it causes.

3. Guide your circles

If friends or relatives send fake updates, gently correct them and redirect them to official advisories.

4. Stay calm and informed

Follow PHIVOLCS Earthquake Information page (earthquake.phivolcs.dost.gov.ph), NDRRMC official Facebook, or your LGU’s verified social accounts for real time updates.
