Two confirmed cases of Mpox (Monkeypox) have been recorded in Iloilo; one in the province and one in Iloilo City, marking the first official reports of the viral disease in the area. At the same time, the city has also reported two remaining active cases of COVID-19, reminding us that vigilance is still key when it comes to public health.

Mpox in Iloilo: First Cases Confirmed

According to the Department of Health (DOH), the Mpox case in the province involves a patient with no recent travel history, suggesting a possible local transmission. Health authorities have already identified nine (9) close contacts, all of whom are currently under home isolation and close monitoring.

In Iloilo City, another patient has tested positive for Mpox, while four suspected cases are also being tracked. Officials are still determining if these cases are connected to the confirmed one.

But before panic sets in — take a deep breath.

Health officials assure the public there’s no reason to panic. Everything is under control, contact tracing is ongoing, and all close contacts are being watched carefully. As of now, no lockdowns or travel restrictions have been implemented.

Still, the public is urged to:

  • Practice good hygiene
  • Avoid close contact with people who have flu-like symptoms or unexplained rashes
  • Report any signs of skin lesions, fever, or swollen lymph nodes to the nearest health facility

Both the provincial and city health offices are conducting awareness campaigns and community monitoring to prevent further spread.

COVID-19 Update: Low Cases, But City Urges Caution

While Mpox makes headlines, COVID-19 remains present, albeit with low case numbers. As of May 28, Iloilo City has recorded 31 COVID-19 cases this year, with 29 recoveries and only two active cases.

In a public advisory, the Iloilo City Health Office reminded the public, especially those with recent travel history to areas with increased COVID-19 cases like Hong Kong, Singapore, China, and Thailand, to be cautious and proactive.

If you’ve been to any of these places and are experiencing respiratory symptoms:

  • Self-isolate for at least 5 days
  • Consult a doctor immediately
  • Get tested – COVID-19 tests are optional but free at the USWAG Molecular Laboratory in Molo (just bring your PhilHealth ID)

“Sa subong, wala kita damo nga cases; sometimes ga-zero gani ang aton daily census. But as a constant reminder, we advise everyone to practice proper hygiene such as frequent handwashing or sanitizing with alcohol, avoid crowded places, and we also recommend wearing a mask,”

City Health Officer Dr. Mary Ann Poli-Diaz

So stay calm, stay clean, and stay informed. Let’s all do our part in keeping Iloilo safe and healthy.
