A mountain escape that’s peak chill and star-studded at night.

Been itching to take a break from the city lights and dive into the stars? Or do you want a weekend escape without going too far? If you’re from Cebu, you should look up, literally. Because somewhere in Brgy. Cogon, Naga, is a humble peak called Mt. Naupa, sitting 550 meters above sea level, waiting for your next spontaneous getaway.
Path to the Stars
The trail up is relatively short, only 30 minutes to an hour, depending on your pace. Along the way, expect a mix of grasslands, narrow footpaths, and a few cliffside spots that’ll make you grip your water bottle tighter. And don’t be surprised if a group of local kids offers to guide you. Some of them know the trail like the back of their hands. Rates are usually voluntary or negotiable, so it’s best to ask politely and thank them generously if they help.

Walk the Skyline
It’s all worth it. Mt. Naupa has one of the widest, clearest campsites I’ve ever seen. With just enough flat space for tents and a backdrop of rolling hills, it’s a great spot just to sit down, slow down, and look up.
If you’re staying overnight, bring:
- A sturdy tent (winds can get wild)
- A jacket or blanket (it gets surprisingly cold)
- A headlamp or flashlight
- Snacks, water, and a change of clothes

And if you’re planning to stargaze? A ground sheet or mat so you can lie back and enjoy the night sky. On a clear night, the stars are incredible. No city lights. No noise. Just you, your friends, and the sky doing its thing.
Cozy Up to the Cosmos
Avoid night trekking, especially if it’s your first time. The trail isn’t technical, but it’s still not worth the risk. You don’t need a guide, but having one can be helpful if you’re unsure or unfamiliar with the terrain. If you’re not confident carrying your stuff up, you can hire a porter at the chapel.

There’s usually a small store near the campsite, but don’t count on it for full meals. Be sure to pack your essentials, especially if you’re a picky eater or have multiple food allergies.
How To Get There
Exact Location: Barangay Cogon, City of Naga, Cebu, Philippines
- By Car: If you’re driving from Cebu City, it’s super easy. Just fire up Google Maps or Waze and type in Cogon Chapel, Naga City, Cebu, that’s the jump-off point for the hike. The drive typically takes about 1.5 hours, depending on traffic conditions. You’ll pass through the South Road Properties, then on to Naga proper. Once you reach the main highway near South General Hospital, take a turn at Eskina Rikio. From there, follow the road signs or ask a friendly local for Cogon Chapel. Parking is limited near the chapel, but you can usually find a safe spot along the roadside.
- By Commute: Head over to the South Bus Terminal or Taboan Market and ride a bus or jeepney bound for Naga. Just make sure the signboard says “Naga” or “Rikio.” Some jeepneys only go halfway, so it’s best to double-check with the driver. Tell the conductor to drop you off at Eskina Rikio, near South General Hospital. From there, you’ll find a line of habal-habal (motorbike taxis) waiting to take you to Cogon Chapel, the ride takes around 15–20 minutes.
The place Mt. Naupa isn’t only about the climb, but it’s also about the calm sensation it brings to us as a person. It’s the kind of place where you pitch a tent to enjoy under the stars, eat instant noodles with your hands or utensils, laugh over a card game, and wake up with grass under your shoes. You don’t need fancy gear or a huge budget. On a free day, get up with a sense of adventure, and maybe a few friends who won’t mind sleeping under the stars.
So go and make the hike, as you set up your tent, and let the stars keep you company for the night. Cebu has a lot to offer, but this one’s got just the right amount of magic for a weekend you’ll want to do again.
