This announcement, made on May 18, 2025, symbolizes the successful culmination of over two years of technical talks, pest risk assessments, and regulatory collaboration between the Philippines and the Arab Republic of Egypt. This demonstrates regulatory compliance and increased trust in the country’s plant health and safety procedures.

Exporting the Durian

For fast shipments, Philippine exporters must verify that Egyptian importers get import permission via the Egyptian Agricultural Quarantine’s computerized system. Once the permission is obtained and all phytosanitary standards have been met, the Bureau of Plant Industry will issue a phytosanitary certificate confirming that the durian is pest-free. Only when these stages are accomplished can supplies to the Egyptian market begin.

Back Then

The Philippines’ journey to market access began in June 2023, when it publicly declared its intention to sell fresh durian to Egypt. Since then, BPI has actively engaged with Egypt’s Central Administration for Plant Quarantine (CAPQ) to resolve critical issues about pest surveillance, phytosanitary procedures, and export regulations.

Ph Statistics

In 2024, the Philippines shipped 14,156.87 metric tons of fresh durian to various worldwide destinations, a phenomenal 199.23% increase over 2023, demonstrating the expanding global demand for Philippine durian. With Egypt being on the list of importing nations, durian growers, particularly those in Mindanao—the stronghold of Philippine durian—can expect increased revenue and market prospects. 78% of the durians made in the Philippines come from the Davao region which made it like the durian capital of the Philippines. Egypt is seen as a launchpad into the broader Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, where demand for tropical fruits is rising.

The launch of this new market emphasizes the worldwide competitiveness of Philippine durian and provides new chances for Filipino farmers and exporters to display world-class fruit, enhance profits, and contribute to a more dynamic and resilient agricultural industry.
