After celebrating New Year’s Eve, there is another event that Tangubanons are excited to celebrate: Sinulog! Tangubanons celebrate the feast day of Senyor Santo Niño every third Sunday of the month, during which churches in Tangub hold nine days of Novena Masses, alongside a procession after the Second Mass and a high Mass after the said procession.
The Reenactment of “Batobalani Sa Gugma”
Saint Michael’s Parish Church holds a re-enactment of the song “Batobalani Sa Gugma” (“The Magnet of Love”) after the Mass, performed by students from Saint Michael’s High School. They interpret the song’s lyrics, which tell the story of how the image of Senyor Santo Niño arrived in Cebu. In Santa Maria, Tangub City, the Santo Niño Parish Church also celebrates the feast day of our beloved Savior. Barangay Silanga, Tangub City, hosts a street dancing competition and ritual.
The City of Tangub celebrates the feast day to allow devotees who cannot go to Cebu to celebrate here and praise the image of Senyor Santo Niño. The city has many chapels and barangays that also celebrate the feast day of Senyor Santo Niño simultaneously, typically observed on the fourth and fifth Sundays. Novenas, Masses, and processions are held in the barangays as well.
Additionally, the neighboring city and province, Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur, also celebrates Sinulog.
On the 31st of January, the New People’s Gym of Tangub City, formerly known as the Sinanduloy Cultural Gym and home of the legendary Tangub City Sinanduloy Troupe, will host an event titled “Sinulog Sa Tangub 2025.” All schools from secondary to tertiary levels will perform and dance to offer a dance and ritual presentation for Senyor Santo Niño.
