In the old legends, something that is old and mysterious can hold a lot of tales and folklore that can be passed down to generations.

In Siquijor, it is the oldest tree—the “Old Enchanted Balete Tree!” It  is a 400-year old tree and considered as a tourist attraction in Lazi, Siquijor.  Aside from that, the tree also has a spring inhabited by small species of fish that, when you put your feet in the water, would nibble on your dead skin; as if doing a ticklish massage therapy for your good ole soles!

“El Mistica Vieja”

The balete tree is a family of the Ficus species and it’s native only in the Philippines. The tree features a short trunk with a smooth gray branch, and a broader top that usually grows to a height of 10 to 20 meters. Known for its aerial roots, baletes are considered as one of the most low-maintenance types of plants as they can thrive in long droughts and floods.

According to legends. balete trees are associated with supernatural beings such as fairies and kapres; which marks beliefs surrounding its mystique especially for those who perform rituals. Other stories show unusual and strange paranormal occurrences nearby baletes, and some even say that the 400-year-old tree is bewitched. Tourists visiting the area shared that there’s a distinct energy emanating from the area, leading to speculations of miracles and odd witchery.
