Placed in the southern waters of Guimaras, Taklong Island is the crown jewel of the Taklong and Tandog Group of Islands Natural Park. Declared a national marine reserve in 1990 and upgraded to a natural park in 2025, this 1,143-hectare sanctuary is home to thriving mangroves, seagrass beds, and coral reefs. The University of the Philippines Visayas runs a marine biological station here, making Taklong both a hub for conservation and research.

Taklong Marine Reserve teems with life, from colorful coral gardens to rare fish species, crustaceans, mollusks, and sea turtles. Its mangroves serve as nurseries for young marine life, while seagrass beds help maintain water quality and combat climate change. Even after the devastating 2006 Guimaras oil spill, the island has fully recovered, highlighting the resilience of its ecosystems.

Researchers and marine biologists also frequent the island to study marine ecology and conservation strategies. Programs led by the TINMR Management Office promote sustainable tourism and community development, making Taklong a model for eco-friendly practices.

Conservation Challenges

Despite its protected status, Taklong faces threats from illegal fishing, pollution, and climate change. Active conservation efforts include regular patrols, clean-up drives, environmental education, and climate adaptation strategies. These measures ensure that the marine sanctuary remains vibrant for future generations while supporting local livelihoods.
