Linan Tarsier Conservation Sanctuary in Tupi, South Cotabato, is a special refuge for the rare and captivating Philippine tarsier. Visiting means stepping gently into the world of these nocturnal creatures where conservation meets wonder at the foot of Mt. Matutum. It’s a place of quiet discovery where every rustle in the leaves could be a curious pair of eyes watching you.

Preserving a Delicate Species

Situated at the base of Mt. Matutum, Barangay Linan has grown known unofficially as Tupi’s tarsier sanctuary which is a critical haven for the Philippine tarsier that is locally known as “mal”. To protect these sensitive primates, authorities phased out walk-in visitors in favor of a voluntourism model. Visitors now plant a tree as part of their visit contributing to habitat restoration and demonstrating commitment to conservation. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) restricts access to those who schedule visits in advance through the local Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) of Tupi office.

A Cause with Participation

The sanctuary is part of the larger Mt. Matutum Protected Landscape which is a key area for preserving biodiversity in South Cotabato. These tarsiers depend on intact forests to stay nocturnal and stress free. The voluntourism program not only gives visitors a chance to witness these creatures responsibly but also helps fund conservation through active reforestation
