In Misamis Occidental, there are many well-known waterfalls that attract visitors from all over the region. But before we proceed, let us get to know Misamis Occidental a bit better. Misamis Occidental, often simply called Mis. Occ. by the locals, is located in the northern part of the island of Mindanao, bordered by its neighbors, Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga del Sur. The word “Misamis,” derived from “Kuyamis,” refers to a variety of coconuts. The name is believed to have originated from the early settlers of the province, the Subanens, whose early food sources included the abundant coconuts found in Mis. Occ.
The Famous Lake and Waterfall of Don Victoriano
Lake Duminagat, a crater lake of Mount Malindang, is situated in the municipality of Don Victoriano, Napangan, Misamis Occidental. It is a place where you can experience the serenity of the lake and the tranquility of the people residing nearby. Near the lake, you can also visit the Subanen/Subanon tribes. Lake Duminagat is believed to be a sacred and spiritual place, known for its healing powers. When visiting this solemn and sacred site, we must show respect for both the people and nature.
Piduan Falls, located below Lake Duminagat, is another tourist attraction in Don Victoriano, Chiongbian, Mis. Occ. Nestled in the mountain range of Mt. Malindang, this 60-meter fall has a curtain-like appearance and features mystical, crystal-clear waters.
Traveling from Tangub City to Don Victoriano takes about an hour, depending on the weather. The means of transportation include riding a habal-habal (motorcycle) as a passenger or using privately owned motorcycles. The fare for a motorcycle ride ranges from 700 to 800 pesos, applicable for both Piduan Falls and Lake Duminagat.
The Baga Falls
The Baga Falls, is situated in the Municipality of Sapang Dalaga, Misamis Occidental, in the heart of the woodland of San Pedro, Polangco. The falls have a height of 60 feet. It was named Sapang Dalaga, or Sapa ng Dalaga, meaning “Maiden in the Creek,” by the Spaniards during their colonization of the province. Legends say that whenever the clock strikes 6 PM, a girl can be seen in the creek taking a bath; some believe she is a supernatural being living in that place.
Traveling from Ozamiz City to Sapang Dalaga takes about 2 hours and 26 minutes. The means of transportation is by bus, with ticket prices costing Php 170.00 (Rural Transit or Super Five).
