During high tide, waves crash directly over the rocks, making swimming dangerous. Interestingly, the adjacent beach is better enjoyed at high tide, when more sand is covered with water and the shoreline looks smoother.
The Beach and Surroundings
Next to the pools is a rocky beach that’s worth a stroll, especially for photos. The area has been developed for tourism, with parking areas, small restaurants, and snack stalls lining the coast. After swimming, it’s easy to grab fresh coconut juice or a quick meal before heading onward.
How to Get There?
Location: Pilar, Siargao Island, Philippines
- By Car: From General Luna, drive north along the Siargao Circumferential Road toward Pilar. The trip takes about 45 minutes. Watch for signs pointing to Magpupungko Rock Pools; turn right onto the access road and stop at the entrance hut to pay the environmental fee. Parking areas are available near the beach.
- By Commute: From General Luna, ride a habal-habal (motorcycle taxi) or rent a motorcycle and follow the circumferential road toward Pilar. You can also take a multicab or van heading north and ask to be dropped off at Magpupungko. From the drop-off point, walk toward the entrance road, pay the fee at the hut, and continue down to the pools.
