Hinatuan Enchanted River is a deep spring river famous for its blue waters and long-held local legends. Also called the Hinatuan Sacred River, it flows gently into the Philippine Sea at Barangay Talisay. The name “enchanted” came from diplomat Modesto Farolan, who described its beauty in his poem Rio Encantado.

The Color That Stops You

What draws visitors first is the water itself. The deep blue shade comes from dissolved minerals, sunlight, and depth, creating a color that shifts from turquoise to sapphire. Locals, however, tell another story. They say fairies once dropped jade and sapphire into the river, giving it a glow no other river has.

Depths That Remain Unfinished

Beneath the calm surface is an underwater cave system still not fully explored. The first dive was done in 1999, followed by major expeditions starting in 2010. Divers discovered hidden chambers beyond 30 meters, with later missions reaching more than 80 meters. The river’s depth and narrow tunnels have fueled stories of unseen forces guarding its heart.

Fish That Answer a Bell

Every afternoon, the river comes alive during the scheduled fish feeding. At the sound of music, large schools of snappers and sweetlips rise from the depths and gather near the surface. This daily ritual has become the main attraction, watched quietly from the riverbanks.

The Enchanted River is a mix of fresh and saltwater, creating a rare brackish ecosystem. This balance allows marine and freshwater species to thrive together before the river meets the sea. Some fishermen even claim there are fish here that can never be caught.

Protection Over Pleasure

To preserve the river, swimming in the main pool has been banned since 2017. Visitors are now allowed to swim only in designated areas about 10 meters away from the main lagoon. Life vests are required, and tourism activities are closely managed by the local government to protect the site for future generations.

A trip here is calm and respectful. You watch the fish feeding, take photos from wooden walkways, and enjoy the cool air under the trees. Nearby boat rentals also offer short trips to coastal spots and small resorts around Hinatuan.
