Pinusilan Rock Formations
The Pinusilan Rock Formations are steeped in history. The name “Pinusilan” translates to “gun-shot” in Waray, linked to stories from World War II. Today, the rocks serve as a natural playground for tourists, who come to marvel at the jagged cliffs and photograph the unique landscape.
Blue Lagoon
Enclosed by the rock formations is the heart-shaped Blue Lagoon, a natural pool directly connected to the Pacific Ocean via an underwater tunnel. The lagoon’s calm, azure waters invite visitors to swim and snorkel, while observing small fish that dart around the rocks. Adventurers should exercise caution near the tunnel, where strong currents connect to the open sea.
How to Get There?
Location: Along the Pacific Coast of Northern Samar, about 80 kilometers south of Catarman, the provincial capital.
By Car: From Catarman, drive south on the Catarman–Palapag Road for roughly 3 hours until you reach the town of Mapanas. Continue along the coastal road, following signs or asking locals for “Pinusilan Blue Lagoon.” The roads are mostly paved, but expect some rough patches near the town proper. A private car or rented van is ideal for comfort and flexibility.
By Commute: Take a bus from Catarman or Palapag heading toward Mapanas. Upon arrival at the town proper, hire a local tricycle or habal-habal to reach Pinusilan, which is about 15–20 minutes away from the main road. If visiting Naputad Beach first, the same tricycle can drop you off there before continuing to the lagoon.
Hiring a local guide, like a resident from Mapanas, is highly recommended. Not only do they know the safest paths, but they can also share stories about the area’s history and help navigate the rock formations safely.
Naputad Beach
For those who prefer a gentler experience, Naputad Beach offers a private stretch of white sand just a short walk from Pinusilan. The beach is partially divided by large rock formations, creating secluded spots for swimming or simply enjoying the sunrise.

By Walking: Simply walk along the shallow shoreline toward the neighboring beach.
