TakTak Falls sits in the municipality of Santa Monica, at the northern end of Siargao Island, far from the surf-heavy streets of General Luna. It is the only known waterfall on the island, standing about 15 meters high and wrapped in a thick tropical environment. The drive alone sets the tone. Long coconut-lined roads, small coastal villages, and wide open views make the 1.5-hour journey feel like part of the reward.

At first glance, TakTak Falls feels modest, especially if you have seen larger waterfalls elsewhere in the Philippines. But spend time around it and the place grows on you. The pool below the falls is calm, with select spots deep enough for careful jumps. A tree hangs over the water and has become a favorite launch point for locals. There are also small ledges along the rock face, best admired with caution.

Exploring Beyond the Base

Adventure does not stop at the pool. A narrow path on the left side of the waterfall leads up to the top. The climb can be slippery, but the view from above is worth the effort. From there, you can look straight down into the basin and watch the water spill over the edge. Many visitors miss this part and leave too early.

Safety and Jumping Tips

Not all parts of the pool are deep. Only jump where locals say it is safe. Avoid climbing wet rock faces, especially near the main drop. During heavy rain, water levels can rise quickly, so check conditions before swimming.

Morning is the best time to visit TakTak Falls. Fewer people come early, and the light filters nicely through the trees. Weekdays are quieter than weekends, and the dry months make the climb to the top easier.

TakTak Falls is not about size or drama. It is about space, time, and slowing down. Stay longer than planned, explore beyond the obvious, and the long road from General Luna starts to feel short.

How to Get There?

Location: Santa Monica, Siargao Island, Philippines

  • By Car: From General Luna, follow the main circumferential road north toward Santa Monica. The drive takes about 1.5 hours by car or motorbike. Use Google Maps and search for “TakTak Falls.” When you see the sign that reads “TakTak Waterfall 500m turn right,” turn right immediately. The waterfall is 500 meters in from the main road, not 500 meters ahead. Follow the dirt road until you reach the entrance hut.
  • By Commute: For commuters, take a van or bus from General Luna to Surigao City and ask to be dropped off in Santa Monica town proper. From there, hire a habal-habal to TakTak Falls. The ride from town to the entrance is short, but agree on the fare before leaving. Public transport is slower, so plan for a full-day trip.
