As temperatures rise and the risk of heat-related illnesses escalates, the Department of Labor & Employment (DOLE), under the guidance of Secretary Bienvenido E. Laguesma, is taking bold steps to safeguard the health and well-being of workers nationwide.

Labor Advisory No. 08, series of 2023, signed by Secretary Laguesma, states the urgency of the subject, entitled SAFETY AND HEALTH MEASURES TO PREVENT AND CONTROL HEAT STRESS AT THE WORKPLACE. The Labor Code 168 serves as a guidance for companies to offer flexible work arrangements to lessen the stress caused by scorching temperatures and stifling humidity.

Secretary Laguesma’s proactive stance extends beyond words, as he advocates for the provision of free water access and better workplace ventilation to combat the heat effectively. These proactive measures not only enhance employee comfort but also serve as vital safeguards against heat-related ailments such as heat strokes and high-blood pressures.

Furthermore, the call for compassion echoes through the walls of DOLE, as Regional Office 6’s Information Officer, John Mandario, urges employers to be more considerate in offering leave options. Particularly, for those workers with medical conditions which can be affected by the rising temperature. In this announcement of care and caution, the well-being of every worker is prioritized, ensuring that no one is left vulnerable in the face of soaring temperatures of the country.
