Say goodbye to avian influenza, Kagay-anons!

The Cagayan province is free from highly-pathogenic avian influenza (bird flu), according to the Department of Agriculture (DA). In the latest issued memorandum circular (No. 46), DA Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. indicated that the province has zero reports for bird flu since 90 days from the thorough monitoring, cleaning, and disinfection.

Bird flu, or avian influenza, is a viral infection affecting birds, especially poultry; and its highly pathogenic strains, such as H5N1, can cause severe illness and death in birds and can be risky to humans if transmitted. The disease spreads quickly, specifically in areas with poultry populations, and can affect the economy of the area.

Importance to National Poultry Production

Located along a major bird migration route, Cagayan’s poultry industry plays a key role in the Philippine’s food supply, nearly 10% of our national output in the second quarter of 2024, according to the Department of Agriculture. Gratefully, with their prompt actions, they were able to successfully manage the bird flu threat, making sure that the region’s role in national poultry production and the nation’s food security will be maintained.
