President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. has announced that the Panguil Bay Bridge will open later this year and will be the longest sea-crossing bridge in Mindanao as a part of the government’s plan to connect different islands better.

The Panguil Bay Bridge, which is 3.17 kilometers long, will connect Lanao del Norte to Misamis Occidental. It’s almost finished, with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) saying it’s 90% complete. Right now, it takes between one and a half to two and a half hours to travel between Tubod in Lanao del Norte and Tangub City in Misamis Occidental using ferries or driving. Once the bridge is open, this trip will take just seven minutes!

The bridge construction started in 2020 and is expected to be finished by October 2024. The project has cost PHP 7.3 billion, funded by a loan from South Korea.

In his speech, President Marcos also mentioned another important project—the Guicam Bridge in Zamboanga Sibugay, which will connect Olutanga Island to the mainland. Both bridges are part of the government’s plan to make traveling between islands easier.

DPWH Secretary Manny Bonoan talked about how long people have been planning this bridge. “This bridge is very important. We’ve been talking about it for many years. Even when I was at the department many years ago, we were already planning it. Now, it’s finally happening,” he said.

The Panguil Bay Bridge will make travel much faster and improve connections in Mindanao, benefiting many people and businesses in the region.
