Mt. Megatong is the humble pride of Sitio Talos, Sto. Tomas, Davao del Norte. Though its elevation is around 430–450 meters (1,400–1,500 ft), the climb is rich with sweeping ridge views and small river crossings.
A Ridge-to-Ridge Journey
Your day starts in Sitio Talos, often accessed by a 30-minute jitney or skylab ride from Sto. Tomas’ town proper. Then, a trail leads through grassy knolls and rolling ridges toward the summit. The final ascent, about 5 km from Lantawan ni Bakoko, crosses multiple ups and downs before the final ridge and summit.

Budget about 2 to 4 hours to reach the top, depending on weather and pace. Trails are exposed, so the sunrise heat can feel intense.
At the Summit
When you reach the top, expect rock-heaped ridges covered in grass, offering 360° views of Davao del Norte’s landscape. On clear days, you may glimpse Davao Gulf in the distance and nearby peaks like Mount Pandadagsaan. Keep in mind the summit area has sheer drops along its sides, so stick to safe spots.
Feeling the breeze at the peak, you’ll find locals selling cold drinks, a welcome relief after the ascent.
Unique Trail Features
• Open ridges: Most of the hike is on grassy terrain with minimal shade. An umbrella or sun hat is recommended.
• River crossing option: Some hikers return via the Kipaliku River trail, crossing the river up to 15 times. When the river is swollen this route can be risky, and many choose instead to retrace their steps.
• Minor but testing: Officially classified as a minor climb, yet trail conditions and sun exposure make it feel more demanding, rated around 4 out of 9 difficulty by local guides.
Why Megatong Is Special
• Stargazing and sea of clouds: Staying overnight at camp spots near the ridge offers chances to witness a sea of clouds or starry skies at the summit.
• Affordable and locally guided: A DIY hike could cost around ₱850–₱1,500, including registration, guide, and transport. For guided packages and adventure with safety, look into groups like Mt. Megatong Guideship.
Even as a lesser-known peak, Mt. Megatong offers a rewarding mix of grassy ridges, wide views, affordable adventure, and a peaceful atmosphere. It’s ideal for dayhikers looking for a sharp, early training climb, or anyone wanting to catch a sunrise above the ridges, camping under open skies.
