“Following Christ is not easy; there are many thorns along the path you must take. The cross you carry is heavy, and death awaits you.”

The 14 stations of the cross, or the way of the cross, is a devotional practice that reflects the journey of Christ through his crucifixion. This practice was started way back when the pilgrims revisited the places where it was believed the Passion and Crucifixion took place. The Ways of the Cross serve as a reflection and repentance that is observed during the Lent season. Pope Clement XII formally set the number of stations at 14 in 1731, and the Franciscans were instrumental in popularizing the practice.

Reflecting on the Stations of the Cross
Start an opening prayer and reflection for forgiveness and grace. You can use a small pocket sized booklet that has a prayer guide if you are not familiar with the prayers. Each station has numbers and names, and at each station, you can reflect and offer a prayer to it.
Each station is followed by prayers and meditation:
Jesus is Condemned to Death
Reflect on the injustice Jesus faced and pray for those who suffer unjustly.

Jesus Takes Up His Cross
Consider the weight of the cross and pray for strength to carry life’s burdens.

Jesus Falls the First Time
Acknowledge human weakness and ask for perseverance in trials.

These practices describe the suffering of our creator in carrying the cross to Mount Calvary and a reminder of his sacrifices for mankind. These rituals in offering prayers through participating in the 14 Stations of the Cross helps deepen our spiritual connection, fosters gratitude for the gift of life, and enhances our focus during contemplation.
