While the Vatican mourns the Pope’s passing, many wonder what follows his burial. Are there rituals, meetings, or gatherings that need to take place?

Confirmation of Death and the Onset of Sede Vacante

On Monday, April 21, 2025, in the Vatican, Cardinal Kevin Farrell officially announced the Pope’s passing. It is customary for the Vatican to formally confirm the Pope’s death. Once confirmed, the Sede Vacante, or “The Vacant Seat,” is declared. During this period, no major decisions affecting Church doctrine or governance can be made—except by the Camerlengo, who oversees the day-to-day administration of the Holy See.

Securing Personal Effects and Ceremonial Acts

All of the Pope’s personal effects and living quarters are sealed. The Fisherman’s Ring—used to authenticate official Vatican documents—is ceremonially destroyed to prevent misuse. This act symbolizes the end of the Pope’s earthly authority.

Mourning and Funeral Rites

Novemdiales is a nine-day period of mourning observed by the Vatican. The Pope’s body is prepared and displayed in a simple wooden coffin. The funeral service is usually held in St. Peter’s Basilica, allowing the faithful to pay their respects.

Burial

Following the funeral rites, the Pope is typically buried in St. Peter’s Basilica alongside previous Popes. However, Pope Francis requested to be buried at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.

The Conclave

Approximately 15 to 20 days after the burial, the Conclave begins. The College of Cardinals, comprising up to 140 eligible electors, gathers in secret to vote for the next Pope. The voting continues until one candidate receives a two-thirds majority. The appearance of white smoke from the Sistine Chapel chimney signals that a new Pope has been elected and is ready to be introduced.

The term Conclave comes from the Latin cum clave, meaning “with a key,” referring to the locked room where the Cardinals meet in strict confidentiality.

This process is not only a transition of leadership but also a profound ritual filled with symbolism—reflecting themes of loss, renewal, and continuity that resonate deeply with the Church and its followers.
