Sikyop is a forest escape about 30 kilometers from downtown Iligan. “Sikyop” means hidden paradise in the Higaonon language, and it lives up to the name. Expect muddy trails, limestone caves, spring water, and a canyon-like underground river that feels untouched. If you’re craving raw nature just 30 minutes from the city, read on and plan your Sikyop adventure.

What Makes Sikyop Special

Sikyop is managed by the Sikyop Agriculture Cooperative and sits within ancestral land of the Higaonon community. The trek starts at an open field before entering a thick rainforest filled with towering trees and hanging vines.

The highlight? A 200-meter underground river carved by flowing water over time. The canyon walls rise more than 10 meters high, with sunlight slipping through narrow openings above. Water levels shift from knee-deep to neck-deep, depending on the spot and season.

You’ll also pass through shallow caves with stalactites and stalagmites, and reach Pagangon Falls, a small yet scenic cascade surrounded by rock formations and clear pools.

The Trek Experience

This is not a casual walk in the park. The trail includes downhill muddy paths, uphill forest climbs, rope-assisted descents, and strong river currents in some sections. Trek time from the registration area to Pagangon Falls can take around 30 minutes or longer depending on pace.

Management advises that pregnant women, those with heart conditions, injuries, or low fitness levels avoid the trek. Wear trail shoes or trekking sandals with strong grip. Expect to get wet.

Sikyop Treetop & Overnight Stay

Before heading deep into the forest, you’ll pass the Sikyop Treetop Experience where visitors can try the zip line. There are also traditional Higaonon huts around a bonfire area for overnight stays. It’s simple, quiet, and surrounded by nearly 100 tree species and wild orchids within the Malizord Wild Forest.
