Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action series is finally getting clearer as the main leads have been cast and the powerful avatar Ang is none other than the Filipino-Canadian, Gordon Cormier.
Cormier is an 11 years old child actor known for his roles in shows like “Lost in Space” and “The Stand.” It gives us pride that an actor with Filipino blood will play the iconic character.
To those very few who doesn’t know the popular animated series “Avatar: The Last Airbender”, it is a story of a young Avatar who was frozen in an iceberg for 100 years and thought to be lost forever by the people. It follows Aang as he learns to master bending all the elements fire, water, earth and air to defeat the fire lord and bring peace and balance to the world again.
The series have claimed many awards including multiple Annie Awards, Genesis Awards, a Primetime Emmy Award, and a Peabody Award.
The rest of the main cast include Kiawentiio as his love interest Katara, Ian Ousley as Katara’s brother, Sokka, and Dallas Liu as Zuko, the young prince of the fire nation. The actress for Toph who will teach Aang earth bending has yet to be announced.
The live-action film in 2012 titled “The Last Airbender” have received criticism for “whitewashing” so everyone has higher expectations for this series.
Initially, it was the original creators of “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, who were the executive producers of the new show, but they quit in August last year.
Now, Netflix confirmed that Albert Kim will serve as writer, executive producer and showrunner of the series. Kim’s work includes “Sleepy Hollow,” “Deadly Class,” and “Nikita.”
