The Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) observed roughly 2,000 bats soaring through the dusky skies of Maitum during its first quarter of monitoring bat activity. The group documented the bats roosting high above the trees and flying gracefully through the twilight.

Did You Know?

The Giant Golden-Crowned Flying Fox (Acerodon jubatus), also known as the Golden-Capped Fruit Bat, is one of the largest bat species in the world and is endemic to the Philippines. This fully grown megabat can have a wingspan of up to 1.7 meters (5.6 feet) and can weigh as much as 1.4 kilograms (3.1 pounds). These bats are frugivorous, primarily feeding on fruits and figs, and they play a crucial role in the ecosystem by aiding in pollination and seed dispersal.

The Challenges of the Massive Fruit Bats

Despite their large size, these giant bats are harmless. Unfortunately, the Giant Golden-Crowned Flying Fox is classified as endangered due to habitat loss from deforestation and hunting for bushmeat. Conservation efforts are essential to protect this unique and vital species. CENRO’s initiative to monitor bat populations aims to ensure their safety against threats such as habitat destruction and poaching.

CENRO’s Commitment

The office is dedicated to protecting the province’s natural resources, especially flying creatures and other wildlife. They urge communities to support the preservation of these crucial species to ensure their survival. This effort aligns with Republic Act No. 9147, the Wildlife Resource Conservation and Protection Act, which mandates the protection of threatened species and their natural habitats.

With ongoing commitment and vigilance, we can all contribute to the protection of our environment and its inhabitants.
