Whether you’re planning a quick solo escape or an off-grid trip with your barkada, Iloilo has no shortage of eco-tourism destinations that are Instagram-worthy to explore this summer. So, here’s your guide to some of the must-visit green spots:
Islas de Gigantes

Hailed as the 14th one of the most beautiful places in the world back in 2016, Islas de Gigantes is an island group in Carles that’s famous for its white sand beaches, jaw-dropping limestone formations, and crystal-clear waters. The island got its name from local folklore wherein giant bones were said to be found in one of its caves. In the olden days, the island was initially called “Salauag” after a specific type of tree prevalent and endemic in the island.




HOW TO GET THERE?
Exact Location: Isla De Gigantes, Carles, Iloilo, Western Visayas
- BY COMMUTE: Book a flight to Iloilo City and head for the Tagbak bus terminal at the Jaro district. Look for a bus or a van bound for Estancia. Tell the driver to drop you off at the said town. Upon arriving, you can ask the locals for directions going to the Estancia port. There you can inquire on the boat trip to the island that starts as early as 10AM.
Sicogon Island

Located north of Iloilo City, Sicogon is a rising eco-destination as it aims to balance nature preservation with modern amenities. In the 70’s and 80’s, the island became known due to the resort built on it, the Sicogon Island Resort; soon enough, more and more resorts were established in Sicogon, causing an economic and tourism boom.



HOW TO GET THERE?
Exact Location: Sicogon Island, Carles, Iloilo
- BY COMMUTE: If you are coming from Roxas City Airport, you can take a taxi or tricycle on your way to the bus terminal in Pueblo de Panay. From there, take a bus/van bound for Carles. From Carles Bus Terminal, take a tricycle going to Sicogon Island. Alternatively, if you are coming from Iloilo City International Airport, you can take a taxi to Tagbak terminal in Jaro, Iloilo. From the terminal, ride on a bus/van bound for Carles. You may also take buses bound for Balasan or Estancia, but the tricycle ride to the resort will take a few minutes longer than from the Carles terminal. Then take a tricycle to Sicogon Island.
Tinagong Dagat

Once upon a time, a man and woman fell in love, Nagong and Agat. But, their tale was short-lived as Agat fell ill and perished, leaving Nagong grieving for her death and crying until his tears caused a river to sprout in the wilderness. And that’s how the legend of “Tinagong Dagat” goes, tucked in Barangay Cabatangan, Lambunao, it is said that the cultural lake is always waiting to be discovered.
HOW TO GET THERE?
Exact Location: Brgy. Cabatangan, Lambunao, Iloilo City
- BY COMMUTE: First, make your way to Lambunao from Iloilo City. You can hop on a jeepney, bus, or van bound for Lambunao from either Ungka Terminal in Pavia or Christ the King Terminal. Fare usually ranges from ₱50 to ₱60, but it can go up to ₱90 to ₱100 depending on the season or time of day. Once you arrive in Lambunao, don’t head out just yet, you’ll need to check in with the local tourism office. They’ll assist you with the necessary permits and safety protocols before you can go up to Tinagong Dagat.
Tinori-an River

This 6km-long river connects two barangays and is being eyed for eco-tourism. You can do light kayaking, mangrove watching, or just enjoy the rural charm. It has been rehabilitated continuously by LGUs as they saw the potential it holds, not only for tourism but also for the livelihood of its locals as the river offers bountiful fish and other marine life.

Exact Location: Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo Philippines
- By Ferry/Land Travel: Take a ferry from Cebu City to Iloilo City, fare varies from ₱1,400–₱1,800, depending on accommodation class. Then, take the bus from Tagbak Terminal in Jaro, Iloilo City, take a Ceres bus bound for Barotac Viejo or Estancia. Alight at Barotac Nuevo plaza.
Bulabog Putian National Park

If you’re a fan of ancient caves, then the Bulabog Putian National Park will be your best bet. It is protected by the LGU to preserve its beauty. And the best part is, the park alone has 13 caves for you to explore wherein one of which, the Maestranza Cave, is home to 20,000 fruit bats. The park also has several springs you can dip into along with a river that showcases the beautiful views of Iloilo’s vast mountains.



HOW TO GET THERE?
Exact Location: Dingle, San Enrique, Iloilo, Philippines
- BY COMMUTE: Upon arriving at Tagbak Terminal, you can take a jeep to Dingle and a habal-habal to the park. Just inform the driver of your dropoff location and they’ll bring you straight to it.
