When one mentions Pagadian, fishing is probably the first thing that pops into mind. The city is known as a stop-over for traders back then in the Spanish era where merchants would flock to trade their goods. It’s also known as the “Little Hongkong of the South” due to its rolling terrain. But more than that, Pagadian has to offer too when it comes to tourist spots, and that includes its Puting Balas Sandbar.
The Puting Balas Sandbar is a little strip of land settled in the middle of the sea that attracted netizens in the recent years. Many are amazed by the photos surfacing the Internet, with some saying it’s like the sand bar in Kalanggaman Island.
The white, bare sand found in this strip is also beautiful, where at a certain point of a day, birds tend to flock here, making it an even more of a sight to see. This spot is also relatively unknown even to the locals, so tourists who manage to get here are rewarded with that serene and exclusive feeling.
The place is still uncommercialized, meaning no nearby resorts are available. Be sure too that when you visit to leave no trace.

HOW TO GET THERE?
Exact Location: Pagadian, Zamboanga del Sur
BY PLANE: Starting from Cebu or Manila, Cebu Pacific and PAL are airlines that offer direct flights to Pagadian airport. Flights can be booked online via their website. Upon arrival at the airport, you can take tricycles for P50 per head going to downtown Pagadian.
BY BUS: Neighboring cities such as Zamboanga, Ozamiz and Iligan can be reached thru bus, with Zamboanga City as the starting point, it should take approximately 5 hours to reach Pagadian City. Various bus companies are available in mentioned cities that has trips to Pagadian City.
Once you’re in Pagadian, go to San Pedro Port and from there you can charter boats bound to Puting Balas. Estimated fare is P500, good for 4-5 people.
