They say we shouldn’t put a limit on anything, because the more we dream, the further we will go.
This is indeed true, especially for our beloved Filipino athletes. After shedding buckets of sweat and tears for our nation, they have gone over and beyond to bring forth pride. The athletes, from different sports and walks of life have ensured to give it their all to pay homage to their native land.
They are successful. Though not everyone was able to bring home the bacon, they are all winners in their own rights. They have represented our country well enough and will continue to do so.
The Philippines’ 2020 Tokyo Olympics is dubbed to be the most successful Olympic performance to date after surpassing the previous record of garnering three medals in 1932.
As of August 7, 2021 at 1:00 PM, the medals for the Philippines are as follows:
• Hidilyn Diaz – Weightlifting (GOLD)
Hidilyn Diaz is a Filipina weightlifter who also happens to be a member of the Philippine Air Foce. She took Bachelor of Science in Computer Science at the University of Zamboanga and pursued her career in weightlifting thereafter.
• Nesthy Alcayde Petecio – Boxing (SILVER)
Nesthy Alcayde Petecio is a Filipina who is an still an amateur in boxing, but has carved her own name in the sport. During the 2020 Summer Olympics, she brought home the silver medal in the inaugural women’s featherweight event and is the first Filipina to win an Olympic medal in box.
• Eumir Marcial – Boxing (BRONZE)
Eumir Marcial is also a boxer who bears the real name Eumir Felix de los Santos Marcial. He has represented the Philippines during the 2015, 2017, and 2019 Southeast Asian Games edition. He also raised our flag during the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships in Astana and brought home the bacon. Like Diaz, Marcial is also a member of the Philippine Air Force.
• Carlo Paalam – Boxing (SILVER)
Another boxer from the country, Carlo Paalam is one of the six Filipino athletes who have represented the Philippines. He won the gold medal during the 30th SEA Games light flyweight division.
