On Tuesday, February 13, 2024, the Department of Information and Communications Technology in Northern Mindanao (DICT-10) launched “Lakip”, an online learning course specifically catered to the needs of local communities who have trouble speaking English. The program aims to bridge the learning gap by offering courses translated into the Visayan language.
Coursebank, one of the leading massive online course providers in the country, was credited by DICT-10 Director Sittie Rahma Alawi for its “Lakip” platform. Alawi also acknowledged the work of the DepEd teachers who painstakingly translated the courses into their Bisaya equivalent, saying “This program wouldn’t be possible without their work.”
“Lakip” is the Bisaya term for “inclusive,” and marks the platform’s efforts to provide equally accessible and culturally relevant educational resources to communities that lack the framework to function in tandem with the rest of the country’s educational system. It is a comprehensive learning management system that features a wide range of courses that have been translated into Bisaya, effectively removing language barriers and making contemporary education more accessible to local communities. The program’s pilot users were the Higaonon indigenous community from Barangay Dansolihon.
With Lakip’s successful launch in Cagayan de Oro City, further plans to expand the program to other indigenous communities in need of a more accessible approach to education are slowly being implemented.
