With the developments of technology we have at hand, it is with great joy that we get to see how this contributes to revolutionizing maritime tourism. The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has recently unveiled the trailblazing Solar-Assisted Plug-In Electric Boat, or the SESSY E-boat.
This is a great milestone in the maritime industry in the Philippines, crafted by Mapua University researchers. The ₱19-million innovation received co-funding from the Department of Energy and DOST. They showcased the eco-friendly design of the SESSY E-boat alongside its exceptional efficiency at the Manila Yacht Club.
Enrico Paringit, director of DOST-Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD), stated that its quiet motor and minimal environmental impact makes it such an ideal choice. Using solar energy as its power source, it contributes greatly in our efforts to switch to sustainable energy as opposed to the constant use of fossil fuels.
The SESSY E-boat has the capacity to carry two crew members and 10 passengers. It offers configurable seating to maintain comfort, suitable for popular tourist activities such as snorkeling and diving.
The DOST-PCIEERD is actively seeking technology adopters in order to make this groundbreaking invention accessible to many. Aiming to have this at the forefront of the local maritime scene, the Maritime Industry Authority guarantees its adherence to safety standards. Mapua University researchers are still preparing for the mass production of the SESSY E-boat, as well as its commercialization and other refinements despite the prototype already being completed.
This truly is a promising sustainable alternative for an industry that is so rampant in the Philippines. A bright future is ahead for maritime tourism in the country, allowing us to showcase the wonders that lie in our land and sands while being careful regarding how our environment is affected.
